Swimmers attending competitions for the first time may find the following information helpful. If you have some concerns please see Peta.

A number of competitions are held throughout the season. Forms are sent home for completion. Generally we try to keep up regular competition practise.

Swimmers should arrive at competitions in time to warm up. In most cases this in 1 hour and 15 minutes prior to the event start time: 15 minutes spent stretching and approximately 40 minutes in the water.

Riverton Blue Marlin swimmers are required to wear their club caps when racing - boys should also wear caps unless their hair is very short and all swimmers representing the club in a relay should wear caps.

Competition bathers should be made of Lycra and be tight fitting. Bathers made of endurance materials are not suitable for racing.

Swimmers should have enclosed footwear at competitions - Ugg boots or runners and socks.

At most competitions swimmers are wet and dry all day long and therefore extra clothes are needed. The deck coats are suitable for keeping warm and acceptable for medal presentations.

Healthy food and snacks should be brought to competitions for swimmers to snack on. A thermos with soup, pasta, noodles or rice etc is an excellent way to keep energy levels high. Other good snacks include:

- all types of fruit, especially bananas
- sandwiches with healthy fillings
- rice crackers and rice cakes
- nuts and seeds
- salads with egg / chicken / tuna or lean beef
- low fat muffins
Children should experiment with different types of foods to see what suits them….Some foods may be better to race on than others for each child.

Water should be drunk regularly during the day. Sports drinks in excess should be avoided as they are high in sugar and do not rehydrate the body as effectively as water does.

Club parents are requested to stay off the pool deck except when fulfilling time-keeping duties or taking photographs (after races). No parents are permitted in the marshalling area.
